Ven. G.J.C. Marchant

George Marchant was the Vicar of St. Nicholas Church, Durham City from about 1955.   He became Rural Dean of Durham, then Archdeacon of Auckland in the Diocese of Durham and a Canon of Durham Cathedral.  He and his wife Eileen retired to Norwich, where he continued to work and study energetically until, at the age of 90, he died after a very brief illness.  He was a kind, caring, studious man, much loved by his congregation and the many students at Durham University whom he and Eileen helped over many years.  I was privileged to know him quite well for many years.  There are trees planted in his memory at Durham Cathedral and at St. John's College, Durham.  The painting shows him in contemplative retirement.
